NRL Supercoach Season Review – 2023

Yep, another poor year, but not too poor? Actually, a pretty midling year, but I did feel like I was in control of my season, despite a horrid start. This bad start, was my worst start to NRL Supercoach ever. Here are some highlights/lowlights:

  • Gameweek 3, I achieved my worst ever round position that I can recall, that week ranking 104,581.
  • This poor Gameweek 3 score gave me my worst ever Overall Season Rank, with my overall position dropping as low a 85,059, a new record I believe.
  • By Gameweek 5, I had participated in 40 H2H match ups, winning only 4 of these. A 10% success rate is pretty poor by any standard.
  • A solid to take from this, is that I turned it around after that, and started the long climb up the ladder. If there is a consulation to take from it all, it is that I achieved my highest Season Rank of the year in the last Gameweek of the season.
  • Unfortunately, I did not make many major mistakes, other than ones that were luck / variance related. Example: Starting with Drinkwater at FLB, only to have him score 59 in Gameweek 1 ( I also captained him this round), and then in Round 2, he scored 1 point, and managed to get injured, as well a being suspended for 3 games. FML. Bad pick? Not really, as he ended up the second highest scoring FLB (6th overall) for the season, with an average score of 83.4, with only Ponga beating in the position with an average of 87.4. Seriously, that has to be seen as some kind of unlucky.
  • I might need to start considering that I just plain suck at this game. Hell, I could not even win The inaugural UNLUCKY! League (not to be confused with The UNLUCKY! Cup, which is my $50 cash league) against a bunch of rookies, losing the GF by 5 points, seriously, FML. Looking at my previous Final Ranks for NRL Supercoach
  • Just, Fuck.

So anyway, I am not going to list all the leagues and competitions I was in, as really, I don’t have much more to add than what I have already mentioned above. Sure, I got plenty of stuff I could whinge about, but there is no point, I just have to be better at this damn fantasy sport caper, if I wish to keep playing in cash leagues. Anyway, the below graphic sums up the leagues that I took part in:

For the record, and just to put down a marker in the sand and to help track my performance year on year, here is how I fared in the Groups that I took part in this year:

Damn, when I look at my yearly average NRL Supercoach final position below, I guess I did not do too bad. I might continue to track this using this table.

So, months have passed since the end of the season, and I have still not published this post, which shows the level of interest I had once I wrapped up for the season. Hell, I could not even be bothered to look over what I wrote months ago, so in the name of keeping this Season Review short, I might as well leave it there. I am keen for next season, to try and turn my Supercoach, and fantasy form around, and prevent the dreaded fantasy recession! Fuck it, if I need to add anything, UNLUCKY!, I can just edit the post later!

NRL Supercoach Season Review – 2022

Gah, what a miserable season. Only one thing to do, and to keep it short and sweet, it is just too painful to go over it all in detail, a bona fide stinker! While not quite the worst season that I have ever had (309 places short of that!), it is damn close. An argument can be made that there were more people playing this season, so it is slightly tougher to make your way up the ranks, but I say poppycock to that! As I become more experienced with the game, there really is no excuse, even if I did pursue what I knew was a deliberately risky strategy of starting with Turbo, even against my better judgement. Add to that plenty of misfortune with late outs and injuries, this season was destined to be doomed. This season, I had at least 4 late outs affect me, as I was working and unable to check team lists, at least another 4 injuries that struck the week I traded a player in or the week after, not to mention at least another 4 players that stopped performing once I got them in my team! *Sigh* Yeah you could say I was UNLUCKY! But I would rather put it down to bad management on my behalf, which led to said bad luck.

Anyway, plenty of bad decisions were made, and some of this mentality carried over to my FPL team, but that is another story. So without further ado, here are the NRL Supercoach cash competitions that I was a part of this year:

  • The UNLUCKY! Cup
  • Cash Kings $100
  • The Bowman Cup XII
  • Cash Kings $50
  • Plenty Pineapples
  • Sandow Memorial 8

To indicate how bad a season I had, I only reached the GF in 2 Bottom 8 Cups (Bowman XII Cup and Cash Kings $50), although I did win both. Unfortunately, only The Bowman Cup XII had a prize for this, which was a rather generous $100, so not a total disaster. The real kicker was that I did not qualify for any of the playoffs in The UNLUCKY! Cup (formerly the Tackle Happy League), something that has never happened before! Yikes! I also took part in the following FREE leagues:

  • UNLUCKY! FS League
  • ADDICTS CANBERRA 1

No such luck in these, wiped out also. So, where to from here? I will spend the off season licking my wounds, and dwelling on the fact that I pushed against so many of my usual strategies and philosophies that I have made for myself on how to play the game. Next season may spell a return to the more “conservative” approach, where I stick to the basics and go for a more risk averse approach. Plenty of time to think about it. Unlucky!

Fantasy Payday – August 2022 Edition

It ain’t getting any better. So far, not looking like I am going to get anything out of my NRL fantasy games this season, I have done that poorly. Short of some kind of a massive upset in my NRL Supercoach Bottom 8 GF’s , I am going to get a total blank. Not only will it be close to my worst NRL Supercoach season ever, it will also almost certainly be my worst financial outcome for a fantasy season. Man, what a stinker. Unlucky!

2022 Fantasy Sports Spend:

  • $50 – The UNLUCKY! Cup 2022 NRL Supercoach Competition

Fantasy Payday – June 2022 Edition

Money flying away. That’s what this year may be in terms of fantasy sports for me, as in one of my usual main earners, NRL Supercoach, I am having a dumpster fire of a season. This was always a possibility as I took a rather aggressive / against my better judgement strategy into this season, and now I am paying the price. Unlucky! Anyway, last seasons FPL winnings are in, so time for an update.

2022 Fantasy Sports Spend:

  • $50 – The UNLUCKY! Cup 2022 NRL Supercoach Competition

Fantasy Payday – May 2022 Edition

I am a bit late with the first Fantasy Payday of the year, but mainly because things don’t look so good on the winning side of things, regardless of how I am actually fairing in fantasy sports this year. Oh well. I have gone hard on NRL Supercoach this year, but had a terrible start to the season, due to my pig headedness. Live and learn, although in my defence, I knew I was going with a high risk/high reward strategy, and expected it to possibly all go horribly wrong. Anyway…

2022 Fantasy Sports Spend:

  • $50 – The UNLUCKY! Cup 2022 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $25 – Sandow Memorial 8 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $50 – The Bowman Cup XII NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $50 – Cash Kings $50 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $100 – Cash Kings $100 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $50 – Plenty Pineapples NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $25 – NRL Supercoach Plus Pass
  • Fantasy Sports spend to date 10/5/2022: $350

That’s already more than I spent on all my fantasy sports last year, and have not even got around to the next EPL or NFL season. Whoops! Worse yet, not looking like I am gonna win a brass razoo out of any of this, going on how I am currently travelling. Still time to claw something back, but it would make sense to go from my most successful year straight into my least successful year, I seem to see-saw like that! Unlucky!

Fantasy Payday – November 2021 Edition

November is a bit later than ususal for one of the last Fantasy Paydays of the year, but I have been a lazy bum, so time to catch up! In 2021, a new benchmark has been set! 2021 Will go down as my most fiscally successful fantasy season on record, where I managed to clear $679 in prize winnings! Sensational! Even more impressive given that this year, I have entered a record amount of cash competitions.

2021 Fantasy Sports Spend:

  • $50 – Tackle Happy 2021 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $25 – Sandow Memorial 7 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $50 – The Bowman Cup XI NRL Supercoach Competition

2021 Fantasy Sports Balance:

  • 2021 Fantasy Sports winnings balance to date 16/11/2021: $679

So, I guess the saying “you gotta risk it for the biscuit” works here, so while despite my high spend on competition fees, I turned the largest profit on record, one that will be hard to beat! And while I have entered a number of FPL Cash Leagues that will only come to fruition next year, I am not sure that there will be much in the way of winnings to come from those, given how tight these competitions are! Unlucky! Anyway, 2021 goes down as my most successful fantasy season to date, lets see what the new year brings!

Yearly Fantasy Sport Winnings:

  • 2021: $679
  • 2020: $120
  • 2019: -$220
  • 2018: $316.25
  • 2017: $515

NRL Supercoach Season Review – 2021

What a season! This year was true vindication of going with my gut and following my instincts. A year of being brave, sticking to my guns and holding my nerve to finish with my second best overall rank on record, and just outside the elusive Top 1k. This did give me some mixed emotions, as I had slowly been rising up the ranks the whole season, and I finally cracked the Top 1k with 2 weeks to go. Unfortunately, I got unlucky in the 2nd last round of the season, meaning I just dropped out of the Top 1k, and could not quite claw it back in the final round. Unlucky indeed. Overall, I felt that I had the season well in hand the whole way, and never got into the dreaded situation where I felt I was chasing the game.

So, what were some of the key takeaways of what I got right this season? I think this calls for a list! In short, here are a few things that I think relate to my overall strategy / world view:

  • Trusting my gut more, and was less swayed by Supercoach media.
  • Avoided tearing apart my whole team for byes, injuries, form swings etc.
  • Aimed at getting players who I thought could be season keepers, and less short term trades.
  • Less emphasis on cash generation, and focused on getting points.
  • Remained flexible on strategy outlooks, as well as my views on player form and points potential.
  • Largely ignored H2H play, and concentrated on just scoring the most points I could.
  • Made sure that I did not make any Panic or Rage trades.

Ultimately, all of this helped me have a rather successful season. Despite not winning any H2H Competitions, I still felt I had a good season, and I managed to turn a tidy profit.

YEAR FINAL RANK
2015 13,890
2016 1,259
2017 3,221
2018 963
2019 16,625
2020 8,919
2021 1,109

This NRL Supercoach season, I also took part in a record amount of cash comps, and I did have some success. The cash competitions that I took part of where as follows: Tackle Happy 2021, Bowman Cup XI, Pineapple Express, Sandow Memorial 7, Lobster Mornay, which were all H2H Leagues, while I also took part in an NRL Supercoach Draft League, The Erin Molan Cup. While I felt I was successful in most of them as far as winning prizes goes, I only made one GF, and lost it, so competition wise, I was pretty average! However, I did manage to win a few prizes:

  • The Bowman Cup XI NRL Supercoach – Top Overall Score
  • Sandow Memorial VII NRL Supercoach – Top Overall Score
  • Pineapple Express NRL Supercoach – Top Overall Score
  • Pineapple Express NRL Supercoach – H2H Runner Up
  • Lobster Mornay NRL Supercoach – Top Overall Score
  • Lobster Mornay NRL Supercoach – Minor Premier

So, relatively successful from a prize stand point, even if I did not win any of the competitions. Unlucky! More details on the these prizes can be seen in the November 2021 Edition of Fantasy Payday.

Statistically speaking, this was the second best season of NRL Supercoach for me since I started recording my results. And while I had limited success winning mini-leagues, I still finished the season with the feeling that I had been successful, with my biggest let down being that I missed the Top 1k by just over 100 places. That stings a little, and can certainly be seen as UNLUCKY, but it gives me encouragement to push on next season, and try and crack that Top 1k again!

Fantasy Payday – March 2021 Edition

After a successful, if somewhat interrupted 2020 Fantasy Sports Season, I am now kicking off the 2021 Season by having signed up to a record amount of Cash Leagues in NRL Supercoach. Obviously, big risks can lead to big rewards, or possibly a massive loss, especially if I am UNLUCKY! Being so early in the year, I have no winnings to speak of so far, but I have a substantial lead in the Pickin’ Strawberries FPL H2H Competition, and am currently running a close second in the Strawberry Garden FPL Classic Competition. While this looks promising for some early winnings, I do not like to count my chickens before they hatch!

2021 Fantasy Sports Spend:

  • $50 – Tackle Happy 2021 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $25 – Sandow Memorial 7 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $50 – The Bowman Cup XI NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $50 – Pineapple Express NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $25 – Lobster Mornay NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $25 – Erin Molan Cup NRL Supercoach Draft Competition
  • $25 – NRL Supercoach Plus Pass
  • $5 – NRL Supercoach Stats Website Donation
  • Fantasy spend to date 26/3/2021: $255

As per usual, I count my Fantasy Sports Spend on the calendar year, which means my overall fiscal position at the moment reads something like this:

2021 Fantasy Sports Balance:

  • 2021 Fantasy Sports Winnings Balance to date 26/3/2021: -$255

Lets hope by year end I am in the black! If I back myself, I am sure I can turn a tidy profit.

NRL Supercoach Season Review – 2020

COVID-19 has definitely left a mark on 2020, and fantasy sports did not miss out on being affected. Having said that, I think the NRL did a great job of keeping the sport rolling, and as a result, NRL Supercoach this year was still pretty damn fun! Having said that, I did not have a benchmark year, but rather improved on last years horror show, and managed to win some prizes to boot! Lets have a deeper look…

My final NRL SC team for 2020!

As per usual, I was in 3 main cash leagues (Tackle Happy NRL, Bowman Cup, Sandow Memorial Cup), and while I did not manage to win any of them out right, I did win the following:

  • Runner Up in the Tackle Happy NRL SC H2H League, $150.
  • Winner of the bottom 8 cup in the Bowman Cup X, $100.

So basically, while I did not have a “cracking” year, it was a good turn around after last years absolute shit show in fantasy sports for me. To actually win enough prizes to cover most of my yearly spend on fantasy sport is great! All in all, a moderately succesful campaign, but already keen to improve next season. And with Supercoach adding extra prizes for the top 1011 players (Who came up with that number?), I really want to try to get back to the Top 1K, to try and score not only the Supercoach keyring, but some of the other clobber that they are dealing out! Talk about setting your standards high!

Fantasy Payday – September 2019 Edition

cash8

Having finally bombed out of all my Supercoach Finals, I can now safely update my prize winning situation for the year, and boy is it dire! I have not won a single cent this year, the first time that this has happened to me since I started playing in cash competitions! Not only have I always won something, my winnings usually outweigh my registration fees. Not this year! With no further competitions to pay out this year, here is my final balance sheet for the year:

2019 Fantasy Sports Spend:

  • $50 – Tackle Happy 2019 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $25 – Sandow Memorial 5 NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $50 – The Bowman Cup IX NRL Supercoach Competition
  • $20 – NRL Supercoach Stats Pass
  • $5 – NRL Supercoach Stats Donation
  • $50 – La Liga Mas Valiosa Fantasy Premier League Competition
  • $20 – Tackle Happy Fantasy NFL Draft Competition
  • Fantasy spend to date 3/9/2019: $220

2019 Fantasy Sports Balance:

  • Fantasy Sports Winnings Balance to date 3/9/2019: -$220

The above does not read well at all! I guess I will have to keep my head down and try to get my fantasy sport mojo back! Unlucky!
